Gunman may have hostages in Edmonton building




An armed man is believed to be holding hostages in the Workers' Compensation Board building in downtown Edmonton, police say.

A board spokesman confirmed the hostage taker is a disgruntled workers' compensation claimant.

An employee who was evacuated from the third floor of the building told CBC News reporter Trish Estabrooks that as many as nine hostages were being held on the eighth floor. MORE

City Fines Unlicensed Home-based Businesses

Ten home-based businesses were fined a combined $4,000 for operating without a business licence during a sting operation last week.

The unlicensed businesses were asked to provide services at a local residence owned by the City. When they arrived, they were met by Municipal Enforcement Officers. All the businesses had previously been warned that they need a business licence. MORE

Southgate Pedway Open to the Public

The overhead pedestrian walkway above 111th Street at the new Southgate LRT Station is open to public service as of October 21, 2009.

While Southgate LRT Station and Century Park LRT Station won’t be open until next spring, construction of the pedways at both stations is complete and both pedways are offering public service this fall. The Century Park pedway should be open by the end of November. MORE
